Mentor Graphics' Inflexion Platform Multimedia Feature Pack for its Nucleus OS makes it easier for designers to add advanced multimedia support to embedded systems such as mobile phones, wireless devices, personal media players and set-top boxes.
It is an important addition to Mentor's Inflexion Platform UI, which enables the agile creation and customization of user interfaces for consumer electronic devices. Completely new designs can be realized without modification to a device's software stack.
Inflexion Platform Multimedia Feature Pack goes beyond user interface capability by enabling rich audio and video content to be incorporated throughout a device's interface, without the need for programming or scripting.
Coping with an ever-growing range of media formats such as JPEG, MP3, MPEG and
H.264 is a difficult task. Adding support for content playback from different sources increases the challenge significantly. Mentor's solution takes a modular approach, enabling software components from multiple vendors (including codecs) to be combined quickly and easily.
Example applications include: previews for premium downloadable content (e.g. music videos); animated advertisements; live application icons; embedded context-sensitive audio/video help content; and full-screen streaming video playback.
To ensure maximum interoperability, Inflexion Platform Multimedia Feature Pack implements the new OpenMAX industry standard API. This means that any OpenMAX-compliant multimedia component such as audio and video codecs can be integrated with minimal effort, including those which take advantage of accelerated graphics hardware.
OpenMAX's wide industry support enables the rapid and flexible deployment of streaming media acceleration on a wide range of silicon platforms and operating systems, said Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group. He added that Mentor Graphics' announcement enables embedded developers to take advantage of the full power of OpenMAX across the wide range of embedded platforms that use Nucleus OS.
